About Parma

Parma is a place where art, music, literature, history, traditions and pleasure de vivre are inextricably intertwined. The city is full of corners and evocative places that constantly bring to light fragments of history and culture. A place where the charm of the past and the present come together in a unique path.

City of aristocratic cultural traditions, rich in precious works of art, Parma is famous in the world for its most illustrious sons: artists such as Benedetto Antelami and Frà Salimbene, Correggio and Parmigianino, Bodoni, Verdi and Toscanini, Stendhal and Proust, among the others. Its history tells us of illustrious lordships (the Visconti, the Este, the Sforza, the Farnese, to the Bourbons) whose splendors still shine in  many artistic masterpieces that dot the city and its surroundings.
The National Gallery, located inside the Palazzo della Pilotta, houses works by Correggio, Parmigianino, Canova, Tiepolo and Leonardo da Vinci.

Even modern architecture in Parma has its own space: the works of Renzo Piano, the Paganini Auditorium and the Barilla Center, the wonderful Piazzale della Pace in front of the Pilotta, are just some of the most famous examples.

Parma is especially a city of music and theater. This passion, beyond the binomial Parma-Verdi, is manifested in the variety of proposals and in the structures dedicated to it: the Paganini Auditorium, the Casa della Musica, the Birthplace and Arturo Toscanini Museum, the House of Sound and not least the Teatro Regio, which wanted by Maria Luigia and opened in 1829, is still today one of the most renowned theaters in the world.

In 2020 Parma will be European Capital of Culture; but Parma has always been and will always be a true European capital where culture, elegance and refinement are everywhere, together with the quality of food that is part of his being the focal point of the so-called Food Valley: a riot of flavors for the palates more greedy and refined: Parma's cured meats and cheeses have always conquered tables all over the world.
The most famous is undoubtedly the Parma Ham, produced in the hilly area together with the Salame di Felino; another product, known all over the world, is Parmigiano-Reggiano: made for more than eight centuries using the same method, the same wise rituals of the first cheesemakers are a product with unique characteristics. Highly prized mushrooms with the European recognition of protected geographical indication are offered by the mountains that surround Parma and harmonize beautifully with the DOC wines of the Colli di Parma.

Whatever your interests may be, Parma will not disappoint you: the city, with its historic center, invites you to stroll slowly, to enjoy the elegant buildings, monuments, squares and hidden corners.
